The Motion-Activated Tracking System & Air Guitar

Click the image below to load the QuickTime movie (8MB- try only on a T1 internet connection!).

This system was programmed to write a movie to a hard drive and sound an alert whenever motion (above a set threshold) via a CCD camera connected to a computer is registered. The movie stops as soon the motion stops.

Because the tracker preprocesses the video signal using moving average filters it ignores stray shadows and "hotspots".

The fingertip control of this DSP software is now evolving into an "air guitar". The timing and location of the hand's motion will trigger sound generators to produce notes of different pitches or qualities. Bobby is working on perfecting a location-sensitive optical processor to create music. It's been done at M.I.T., and now has been done at the high school level using a TI DSP.
Bobby's "Air Guitar" (2-10-02) plays 3 pure tones for every position tracked, with changes of a hand in the up and down direction affecting the pitch relationships. Chord structures and volume decay are on horizon for the next version.

The VAB for this can be found in the student work section.
